4. Good experience in Lingnan
Sucrose, also known as frosting, also known as shacha, is similar to salt. Everyone needs to eat it. It is such a wonderful enjoyment. It is not as good as the modern in ancient times. There were only concerns and pains of insufficient consumption. On the modern side, it enjoys the convenient and cheap "industrial taste" while still blowing the original ecological Freshmans who forget their ancestors.
Furthermore, the taste of sucrose is far better than that of maltose that was commonly consumed in the Tang Dynasty, and it has great potential and value for promotion.
So why did Gao Yue advocate selling sugar instead of cotton, tea, or wine?
In fact, the reason is very simple. Sucrose is the same as salt, and its essence is a condiment. This kind of thing can be completely achieved by "eat more for the rich and eat less for the poor". The consumption is not much different (the human body structure determines that you cannot eat salt or sugar products, which has nothing to do with class), and it will not cause the decisive dispute between the salty and sweet parties, which is a very rich modern life. But the latter three, especially cotton cloth, are necessities of life. When the rich have money, they can make money on the texture. No matter how poor the poor, they must keep the cold and shy. Tea and wine are also consumed in large quantities, and poor people must not drink two cents to stop drinking. If they are involved in the monopoly of law, they will definitely not be able to survive. Armed private tea and private wine dealers will appear in large numbers, causing social security to collapse.
Therefore, during the Southern Song Dynasty, tea merchants were more capable than regular soldiers, and it was not difficult to understand that when Jin people attacked, they had to recruit tea merchants to protect the city.
As for the appearance of private salt dealers, such as Huang Chao and Zhang Shicheng, it can basically be declared that the dynasty can be closed and updated.
"Du You's approach in Lingnan can be promoted elsewhere." Gao Yue sang a hymn to Du You in front of the emperor at this moment.
This kind of Du You-style Lingnan experience is not strictly uncommon, and it was formed after listening to Gao Yue's suggestions:
Du You classified a large number of Dongshan Dangxiang slaves sent previously. Women and weak men were assigned to work in the sugar field and the sediment workshop. The strong men were distributed and trained regularly. They also used the recruitment of "flying people" with military talents (there is absolutely no shortage of such people in Lingnan) to serve as middle and lower-level officers. He then asked his confidants to command the army. He quickly organized a military force of thousands of people. Du You also asked the emperor to "Pingbo" military call. Then Du You formed all other local troops in Guangzhou into navy. With his identity and power as the governor of Guangzhou and the commander of the foreign ships, he ordered the Dashima merchants in the city to donate money to build it.
A large number of warships, and through maritime merchants, hired foreigners who were proficient in navigation techniques to board the ship, responsible for the control and driving. After everything was ready, Du You submitted a copy of the "Reply to Qiongzhou" to the emperor. After receiving the approval, he crossed the sea and sent troops to conquer Qiongzhou in the Zhuya area (now Hainan). That's right, Qiongzhou was not under the control of the Tang government at that time. As early as the second year of Qianfeng of Emperor Gaozong of Tang (667), the local Li people, the so-called "Dibuya", launched a rebellion and captured Qiongzhou City. At that time, the main force of the Tang army was focusing on the conquest of Goryeo. The matter of suppressing the rebellion and recovering was put on hold, and it was delayed for more than 120 years.
After the recent 2008 conquest, Du You's "Pingbo Army" finally cleared the Li people in Qiongzhou area. After quelling the rebellion, Du You used thunderous means to send all the thousands of Li people captured to Guangzhou Prefecture for resettlement. His subordinates suggested that the group of prisoners be classified as human households and "half-loan" (the barbarians in Lingnan only need to pay half of the taxes). Du You disagreed and said that this group of people did not need to be human households. In a blink of an eye, they all distributed them to plant sugarcane, boil icing frosting, or shepherd water buffaloes.
After finishing, Du You cut wood and set up fences in Qiongzhou, burned soil to build a stronger and stronger barrier in Qiongzhou City. Using this as a base, he continued to deepen into the mainland of Zhuya and expanded his power. After having the stronghold of Qiongzhou, the entire Guangzhou's ability to control the sea routes was further enhanced. Du You made greater profits in the market trade, so he began to choose elites from the wandering people to replace the previous southern elections and strengthen his own strength. Although the emperor expressed concern and dissatisfaction with Du You's appointment of wandering people without authorization, what's the matter with you, a rank-in official, who was demoted to Changliu by the central government? But the emperor was greedy for the prosperity of Lingnan every year, and in the end he turned a blind eye.
It is not enough to just use force. After all, due to transportation and customs problems in Lingnan, the Tang Dynasty could not have stationed a large number of troops like the northwest and central plains. Emperor Taizong of Tang once said that Lingnan "there are many miasma. If our soldiers are ill, what can we make up for it even if we defeat this barbarian?" He did not advocate a large-scale military action against the barbarians in Lingnan. So Du You began to engage in economic invasion again. He asked the military officials to carry various overseas rare goods to run to barbarian villages in various places in Lingnan. The barbarians lack ethics. Seeing that
I wanted these goods, but I had no money, so the husband sold his wife to change buffalo, the father sold his son to change copperware, the brother sold his brother to change ivory, and there were many chiefs selling tribe members to change spices. At the same time, Du You would also pretend to be "generous". He sent someone to tell the chiefs: It's okay if you can't afford these things, I'm willing to pay them on credit. If you can't afford them next year, you can use the poor households in your clan to offset the debt. In this way, Du Mu brought tens of thousands of debt slaves from Lingnan East and West Second Road, and even Fujian every year.
Some subordinates were worried that the court repeatedly banned slave transactions because of their "harmful family affection". As a result, Du You laughed and replied that the barbarians had no ethics of flesh and blood, husbands sold their wives, fathers sold their sons, and brothers sold their brothers. Isn't it a pity for us to use the principles of corrupt scholars to rush the barbarians? Moreover, in my Guangzhou Prefecture, we may live much better than their original situation.
So some of these slaves were assigned to mines by Du You to mine gold, silver and jade; some to plant sugar, breed buffaloes, and boil sea for salt; some were ordered to renovate the post station roads, or add cities to build cities, and expand the city of Guangzhou. Originally, the buildings in Guangzhou were all made of bamboo and wood, and fires occurred. Du Mu began to dig canals, create fire lanes, and teach locals to burn bricks and build houses. Guangzhou City became very beautiful within two or three years. Du Mu also added the museum hall of the Maritime Bureau and set up a "Fankefang" in the city, allowing sea merchants to live and manage them in a concentrated manner. The goods they transported were taxed, and settled people also had to withdraw household taxes. Du Mu also quickly became strong, and Guangzhou also began to become a new source of wealth for the imperial court!
Therefore, having money and having soldiers is a great loyal minister.
According to Gao Yue's analysis to the emperor, Guangzhou markets can now earn 300,000 guan a year, Fankefang can earn 100,000 guan a year, salt profits are 400,000 guan, evil cut profits are nearly 300,000 guan, and mineral profits are also included. This is the successful "Lingnan experience". I will not give in to my "Xingyuan atmosphere". Your Majesty should immediately encourage Xichuan and Dongchuan to carry out large-scale business operations, so that you can raise military expenses and no longer have to rely on selling off your life.
"But some of the court officials are still quite dissatisfied with the use of slaves. Take Du You as an example. Lu Jiu accused him more than once, and told me that if Du You's trip was aroused by the changes in the Lingnan barbarians, it would be too late to regret it."
In response, Gao Yue smiled slightly and said something, allowing the emperor to completely dispel his concerns.
