Chapter 22 The Zaan Community
Levi lives in a Zaun community next to the Piltover factory area, which is still some distance from the University of Piltover in a wealthy area.
As for the Zaun community, as the name suggests, it is of course a community where Zaun people live together. Most of the people living here are Zaun apprentices who are not even Piltover citizens. There are also some who have lost their money and obtained Piltover status and have no money to move to other places.
The immigrants who went to Zaun - or the people of New Piltover - they preferred to call themselves that.
In short, the people living here are all poor people from Zu'an.
Piltover emphasizes community autonomy. When a community is full of poor people, it will naturally become a "ghost town".
Even the most basic public services are not provided here. The streets are not cleaned, the roads are not maintained, there is no public transportation for hospitals and schools, and even law enforcement officers are reluctant to come.
The walls along the street were covered with Zaun-style graffiti, and the road surface was covered with spider web cracks that had not been repaired.
The floor-to-ceiling windows of the shop were all nailed with thick wooden boards, and the shopkeeper was sitting at the door openly and holding a shotgun, while warmly welcoming regular customers, while being wary of any strangers passing by.
The trash cans on the roadside were all full, and the overflowing garbage spread out like a mudslide.
Those that are heavy, wet, and large stick to the ground in lumps like psoriasis.
Those light, dry, and small items were floating in groups on the road like tumbleweeds.
Any Piltover who comes here will frown in disgust.
This of course also includes Seraphine.
She had been so focused on finding Levi as soon as possible that she didn't have time to feel sick while running all the way.
Now that Levi was beside her, walking on the streets of this Zaun community again, she could not help but notice the extremely poor sanitary environment here.
"Hey~" Seraphine stood on tiptoes, taking small steps, trying to avoid all kinds of garbage dancing in the wind on the road.
But even so, there would still be bags, rags and the like from time to time, blown by her by the wind, rubbing against her white stockings, gold-embroidered skirt, delicate skin, and even the things she cherished the most.
on top of her long pink hair.
This disgusted her and gave her goosebumps.
So Seraphine walked more carefully and slower.
"Can you walk faster, Miss Seraphine?" Levi couldn't help but urge.
The teammate moved so slowly that he was so anxious that he wanted to buy her a wheelchair.
"No, I'm sorry... there is too much garbage here, and..." Seraphine tried hard to move her sore and sweaty toes in her expensive but uncomfortable high-heeled boots: "
I really can’t walk, Mr. Levi."
"How about..." As she spoke, she suddenly became excited again: "Mr. Levi, can you carry me on your back for a while? This way we can walk faster, and you can also 'sing' to me.
I listen!"
"No!" This girl was always thinking about the songs in his head.
But Levi doesn't want to be Seraphine's automatic wheelchair and car player.
What if he was not only singing but also thinking about other things when he was in physical contact with her... Then how could he have the nerve to go out to meet people and speak truth to them in the future?
"Let's walk faster. Once we leave the Zaun community, the environment will be much better. There is a tram stop there, and you can take a ride and rest when you get there."
"We'll talk about music and stuff when we get there."
"Okay..." Seraphine was a little disappointed. But after getting the promise that she could listen to the music as soon as she walked, she still tried to speed up her pace and followed Levi silently.
However, after taking a few steps, she seemed to have discovered some new world. Her innocent and ignorant blue eyes suddenly widened, and she tugged on Levi's sleeve from behind.
"Mr. Levi, look -"
"Why is there a person sleeping in the garbage?"
"Huh?" Levi was also a little curious.
Then he followed Seraphine's gaze and looked into the "garbage dump" on the roadside.
"That's not a garbage dump..." Levi's mouth twitched: "That's his 'house'."
"House, house?" Seraphine said in surprise: "Isn't it just a pile of broken cardboard? Can the broken cardboard be used as a house? Won't it get cold when you live in it?"
"Why does he live here?"
Levi didn't even know how to explain it.
Why? Of course because of poverty!
Who would live in the Hoover Lodge if they were not poor?
So Levi couldn't help but ask: "Seraphine, have you never been to the Zaan community in your life?"
"Well...my dad never let me come here. He said the people living here are bad people and it would be dangerous if I came here..."
Levi: "..."
He instinctively wanted to complain, but looking at the surrounding environment... Mr. Erwin was actually right.
If he had a daughter, he definitely wouldn't want her to come near this place.
"Let's go, Seraphine. Why does that person live in a broken cardboard box... If you walk outside more, you will understand."
"Hmm..." Seraphine nodded confusedly.
However, not long after, she curiously discovered something:
"Mr. Levi, is that also a 'house'?"
"No..." Levi glanced at it: "That's the garbage dump."
"Then why are there people sleeping in there? There are several people lying together..."
Seraphine instinctively wanted to get closer and take a look.
"Stop!" Levi called her with a dark face.
No wonder Mr. Erwin didn't let her come over. With this young lady's naivety, if she had wandered around the Zaun community by herself, something would have happened a long time ago.
"Don't come near them!"
"Why? They are lying in the garbage and sleeping. They look so... pitiful."
"Poor bastard!" Levi scolded in disgust: "Did you see those needles and empty pill bottles? They are a bunch of crazy people who are high with faint light! You'd better stay away from them!"
"Glimmer?" Seraphine was a little surprised: "Is it that kind of illegal drug? I heard from my father, isn't that thing very expensive..."
"So what if it's expensive? In order to use this thing to escape reality for a while, these people are willing to sell their wives, children, and even their own lives."
"But what's the use? After the effect of the medicine is over, what's left is just a more miserable reality."
"People can be poor...but they cannot live in such a twisted way."
Levi had no sympathy for these drug addicts and just urged Seraphine to follow him and move on.
Seraphine was still worried.
Because as she walked, she discovered that there were many, many glimmer addicts like that just on the roadside.
Some of them were unconscious, some were standing dazed, and some were even twitching and crawling on the ground, like a group of infected zombies. But they were clearly still alive, and that was the scariest thing.
"Li, Mr. Levi..." After a while, Seraphine gently pulled his sleeve again.
"What's wrong?" Levi didn't even bother to look back this time: "You didn't see any 'garbage dump' again, did you?"
"Well..." It turned out to be: "Mr. Levi, look at that... is it a garbage dump or a house?"
"...that's the garbage dump!"
"But there's someone sleeping inside."
"Is there any?"
"Yes...one foot is exposed."
Levi: "..."
He took a serious look and raised his forehead helplessly:
"That's not sleeping in it..."
"That's dead inside."
"Huh?" Seraphine's face turned pale: "Corpse, corpse?"
"Why are you surprised..." Levi sighed: "There are always people here who have no money and die of illness, exhaustion, or are beaten to death by gangsters. Just throw the dead body into the garbage dump and burn it with the garbage regularly. That's it.
"
"how so..."
"Wouldn't his family members send him to the cemetery for burial?"
"Who told you that he still has family?" Li Wei sighed helplessly: "Family is a luxury in Zaun, do you understand?"
"And even if we have family members and a family member dies, we still dump the body like this... At most, we can put some effort into moving it to the port and throwing it into the sea. It can be regarded as a 'sea burial'."
"Otherwise, cemeteries, coffins, funerals, memorial services, etc. will all cost money. The people of Zaun cannot afford to spend such honorable money."
"This...is it the same in Zu'an?"
"No, no one litters corpses in Zaun."
"Only the Zaunites in Piltover would do this."
"That's okay..." Seraphine let go of her bitten lips that turned white, and she didn't know who was relieved.
"What a fart!" Levi cursed and said, "Zuan has a special alchemy shop that collects corpses and uses them as experimental consumables for those Frankensteins."
"A good corpse, wouldn't it be a waste if it was thrown away?"
