Chapter 187 German Naval Strategy (5)

At this time, Chen Xiaojun stood up and said, "The above are the draft strategic plan we have formulated for the development of the German Navy. We believe that this strategic plan is most suitable for the current development direction of the German Navy, and also in line with Germany's current national strength, technical level and international environment. Of course, this is just our suggestion. Whether to adopt it or not is decided by the German side. If you have any questions or questions, you can still ask us. We will try our best to answer in detail. At the same time, if you have any modification opinions, you can also submit them to us and we will make serious modifications."

As he said that Chen Xiaojun handed over the draft plan formulated to Tirpitz. The contents were basically mentioned in the exchange process just now, but the format was more standardized, but the explanation was much simpler. After all, the main purpose of this exchange meeting was to provide a detailed explanation of the German Navy's development strategy plan, including answering questions.

Tirpitz also stood up, took over the draft, and said, "Thank you for your work. This period has indeed benefited us a lot. We will seize the time to carefully study and divide the strategic plans you have formulated, and will give you feedback as soon as possible."

After this exchange, the military exchange activities between the two sides will be temporarily concluded, waiting for Germany to respond.

Germany attached great importance to the development strategic plan of the navy this time, so after the exchange was concluded, the relevant content was sent to the palace and the cabinet, and Tirpitz gave a day's explanation for the emperor and the prime minister.

After reading the draft and listening to Tirpitz's explanation, William II gave a very high evaluation of the draft plan, believing that it had indeed found the right direction and path for the German Navy, so he immediately ordered the cabinet to discuss it.

The emperor ordered that the cabinet did not dare to neglect it, and immediately organized relevant personnel to discuss. During the discussion, the naval team of the visiting delegation was invited to answer questions on the spot twice. After more than 10 days of discussion, the naval team of the visiting delegation and the German Navy Department revised the draft based on the opinions of the cabinet, and finally submitted a complete German naval development strategy plan to the emperor.

Of course, from a general perspective, Germany did not make major changes to the main content of the draft, and basically agreed with the opinions of East China **, but only made some corrections to the details.

First of all, in terms of the construction of battleships, the Nassau class and the Helgolan class were still completed as planned and no modifications were made. However, Germany required East China ** to adopt the design method of one type and two ships in accordance with the Nassau class and Helgolan class, to design one type of fast battleship and one type of traditional battleship respectively. As German two-class battleships, the basic data requirements are that the tonnage is about 25,000 tons, the speed of the fast battleship is above 25 knots, and 8 350 mm caliber artillery are equipped with two front and rear guns, and two front and rear guns are arranged along the central axis; while the speed of the traditional battleship is still 22 knots, and 12 350 mm caliber artillery are equipped with 12 350 mm caliber artillery. According to the arrangement of the Helgolan class artillery, in addition to the arrangement of the front and rear central axis bearing double turrets, a double turret is arranged on the left and right sides of the middle of the hull.

The fast battleship will be named Caesar-class and build 5 ships; while the traditional battleship will be named King-class and build 4 ships.

Although the German Navy has already recognized the tactical value of the fast battleship proposed by East China **, after discussion and military chess deduction, it is believed that traditional battleships are still needed in the decisive battle line. This is because although fast battleships have great tactical value and can perform a variety of combat tasks, compared with traditional battleships, due to the pursuit of high speed, the number of boilers needs to be increased, which increases the cost of warships, which is destined to be too large. In the premise of ensuring the basic tactical needs, the number of armored protection and main guns will inevitably be weakened. In the battle line, the speed requirement is not high. Therefore, in the battle line, the role of fast battleships is obviously not as good as that of traditional battleships, and traditional battleships also have the value of continuing existence.

Generally, when Germany builds a type of battleship, four ships form a formation. Due to the same type of ships, they cooperate and supplement each other and are very convenient for logistics maintenance. The construction of five battleships is because due to the advantage of speed, there will be many battleships that can form a single team to perform combat tasks. Four ships can only ensure the minimum requirement of one formation. Therefore, adding one is also to strengthen the combat effectiveness of the rapid battleship formation.

The construction of the King-class was prepared for the upper battle line. The German Navy was very satisfied with the arrangement of the Helgolan-class artillery, because the arrangement of the six turrets is usually three in the front and rear shapes, with 6 main guns in the front and rear directions, and 8 main guns on the side side, with a large firepower waste; while the arrangement of the Helgolan-class artillery can be arranged with 8 front and rear directions, and 10 on the side side, which not only increases the firepower, but also vigorously reduces the waste of firepower. The length of the side waterline has not increased the armor. It is simply a warship tailor-made for the upper battle line. Moreover, after replacing the 350mm main gun, its combat power is undoubtedly stronger. This is also considered that Germany basically has no possibility of catching up with the United Kingdom in the number of battleships, so it can only strengthen the firepower of a single ship and narrow the gap with the United Kingdom.

It should be said that after the exchange with East China **, the German Navy's understanding of the rapid battleships was still very good. The Queen Elizabeth-class rapid battleship built by the UK in the old time and space was called the best battleships during World War I. It not only has fast speed, but also has strong firepower and high protection. It has excellent performance whether it is a team to perform combat missions or to go to the battle line.

However, the displacement of the Queen Elizabeth-class has reached nearly 30,000 tons, while other battleships in the same period were basically around 25,000 tons, which was not a warship of the same level. The Queen Elizabeth-class undoubtedly had a great advantage. When it was about 25,000 tons, the fast battleships were definitely not as firepower and protection as traditional battleships. Later, the Bavarian-class battleships built by Germany reached the same level in terms of tonnage and firepower as the Queen Elizabeth-class, but they served too late, and they basically did not catch up with any war, and they did not have the chance to fight with the Queen Elizabeth-class.

In terms of breaking the fleet, Germany also recognized the view of East China. In the future war, breaking the war will be the main combat mode of the German navy. Therefore, it is imperative to build a powerful breaking the fleet. However, Germany's experience in building warships that perform breaking the mission is basically zero, so it decided to entrust the East China to design all, including battlecruisers, armored cruisers, large cruisers, light cruisers, and two levels of submarines. In the future, these warships will form the German breaking the fleet.

After research by the Navy Technical Department, the opinions of the visiting delegation were consulted, and the technical indicators of various types of warships were finally determined as:

The battle cruiser requires a displacement of less than 20,000 tons, equipped with 8 305mm main guns, with a speed of 27 knots, named Von Tann class, and plans to build 3 ships;

The armored cruiser requires a displacement of 12,000-13,000 tons, equipped with 8 240mm main guns, with a speed of 28 knots, named the Schánhorst class, and plans to build 4 ships;

The large cruiser requires a displacement of 7,000-8,000 tons, equipped with 4 210mm main guns, with a speed of 30 knots, named Queen Victoria Louise class, and plans to build 8 ships;

The light cruiser requires a displacement of about 3500-4000 tons, equipped with 4 125mm main guns, with a speed of 30 knots, named Dresden-class, and plans to build 20 ships;

To be honest, Germany really has no experience with submarines, so it does not require a joint effort. East China ** will submit a design plan directly to Germany based on the situation of the German navy and the needs of breaking the war.

Although according to the recommendations of East China **, armored cruisers and large cruisers can be modified based on the original designs of the Lun-class and Samoa class, although Germany has built 4 ships and 8 ships respectively and has new orders under construction and planned, there is no plan for each shipyard to improve them. This improvement is mainly aimed at increasing the speed, so no one knows how to change it, so it is better to hand it over to East China ***.

However, in terms of ship-based weapons, the Schánhorst class has been upgraded from the 210mm main gun of the Lun class to the 240mm main gun. This type of main gun was originally equipped on the two battleships, Caesar Frederick III and Vecchelsbach class. Of course, the power is much greater than the 210mm main gun, and the rate of fire is almost the same. Now these two types of battleships have basically withdrawn from the front line, so this type of main gun is installed on the Schánhorst class. This also shows that Germany has basically understood the significance of breaking combat, heavy speed and firepower, and the armor protection is relatively secondary.

The Lun-class and Samoa-class warships are now under construction, and their power is changed to steam turbine power. The subsequent ships planned to be built are also changed to steam turbine power. Of course, due to the replacement of power, new warships can be designated as York-class and Oldenburg-class respectively.

Although such a transformation still cannot allow the speed of these two new warships to meet the requirements of breaking the fleet, compared with the original Lun class and Samoa class, the speed has been greatly improved. According to the estimates of East China **, in future wars, Britain is highly likely to adopt the tactic of blocking the North Sea instead of port blocking. Although the area of the North Sea is not large, it still leaves a certain amount of room for maneuvering for the German Navy. Therefore, the speed of warships will play an extremely important role in the war.

In the trade agreement signed by the two sides, there are conditions for East China* to design 4 main battleships, 4 auxiliary warships, 2 submarines and other 10 types of warships for Germany for free. Battleships and battleships belong to main battleships, while armored cruisers, large cruisers, and light cruisers are all auxiliary warships. As a result, before the visiting delegation returned to China, Germany suddenly used 8 models.
