Chapter 136 A new future

At the beginning of Snapdragon's establishment, Chen Dayou, like Du Qiu, had a monthly salary of 15,000 yuan. He belonged to the gold-collar class in China, but he was not as good as illegal immigrants in the United States, so he lived a difficult life, and was free to eat, drink and live in Wei Zhiqin's family.

In July, Du Qiu decided to separate the IVie browser business and establish Snapdragon International. The office location is also located in Mountain View City, which is only a few hundred meters away from Net View. In order to compete for talents, the salary system has become Silicon Valley-wide. Chen Dayou's salary is benchmarked against Net View's ceo Jim Buxdale. Its monthly salary has soared from RMB 15,000 to an annual salary of US$200,000, which is equivalent to 6 times the per capita salary of the United States, becoming a veritable world-class gold collar.

When Chen Dayou returned to the United States from Yuncheng, Xue Liping loved her son and followed her. She was not suitable to continue living in Wei Zhiqin's family. After his income increased significantly, he became generous in spending. He directly pledged the Snapdragon shares in his hands, and then bought a villa in Atherton, a famous luxury residential area in Silicon Valley.

Atherton is sandwiched between Redwood City and Monroe Parker, close to Stanford University, and is only 20 minutes' drive from Mountain View City. It has a very advantageous location. The villa bought by Chen Dayou covers a large area, exceeding 4,000 square meters, with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. In addition to the conventional configurations such as gardens, swimming pools, wine cellars, etc., there is also a tennis court and a golf green. It is surrounded by green trees and lush flowers and plants, as if it is a paradise and full of richness.

"I didn't think of buying such an expensive house. Later, I heard from an investment manager of Sequoia Capital that if a startup company's CEO dares to spend money, it means that I lack confidence in my ability and the development of the company. My mother happened to be interested in this villa, so I gritted my teeth and bought it."

Du Qiu was already immune to this far-fetched consumption chicken soup, but he never interfered with how others spent money and agreed casually: "What the manager said seems to make sense."

"The electronics industry in Silicon Valley has been greatly impacted by Japan in recent years. The economy is in a downturn and housing prices have dropped a lot. Otherwise, you can buy a house nearby? We are just a neighbor."

Du Qiu has no idea of becoming a US citizen, but he will definitely come to Silicon Valley frequently in the future. He really needs to have a house as a place to settle down and asked: "What is the price of your villa?"

"$1.75 million, almost 300,000 cheaper than in 1991."

"Is that true?" Du Qiu didn't understand real estate, but he knew that with the outbreak of the Internet wave, the housing prices here would become more and more expensive in the future. He was a little moved and asked again: "You can move in immediately after buying the villa here?"

"Some are OK, some are not. I happened to catch up with this building. The original landlord has been living in New York and occasionally comes to vacation. It is usually managed by a special real estate custody company. It is well maintained. Basically, you don't have to move anything and you can move in directly." Chen Dayou said while taking him to visit: "I'll call the real estate company later to see if there are any similar properties nearby."

"No hurry, let's talk about it after this period of time."

Du Qiu put his luggage in the guest room on the second floor, visited the villa for a while, and asked, "Where is the meeting schedule?"

"On there." Chen Dayou pointed to the slightly shorter annex on the west side of the villa and said, "I specially created a studio for you, go and have a look."

The area and furnishings of the studio are similar to that of Du Qiu’s lounge at Snapdragon headquarters. Two rows of floor-standing bookshelf are placed against the left and right walls, which are filled with computer journals and professional papers published in recent years. Next to the window is a huge computer desk with two brand new HP desktops on it. It seems that they have really put their heart into it.

"It's pretty good, thank you Brother Chen."

"Don't be polite to each other."

The schedule of the eB standardized meeting was placed on the computer desk. Du Qiu picked it up and looked carefully. He found that the schedule was very tight and scattered. In just three days, there were more than 20 seminars on different topics. He couldn't help but smile bitterly: "It's such a mess, everything needs to be discussed."

"3c is a group of people who are all nerds. They like to pay attention to procedural justice, discuss and vote. In fact, it's useless! In the end, it's not about Snapdragon and Netjing's faces." Chen Dayou sneered, walked to the window and lit a cigarette, and said, "If our two companies don't nod, they can't promote any standards. The standard that cannot be promoted is a pile of waste paper."

This is a fact...

In October 1994, with the support of the US Department of Defense and the European Commission, Tim Berners Lee, the father of the World Wide Web, founded 3C at MIT. It seems to have a very extraordinary background and a big background, but in fact it is just a loose neutral organization, and the standards set are not mandatory. In the original time and space, Microsoft and Netscape are not 3C at all. They each made a bunch of private goods to promote them on the market. After they spread, they were stuffed to 3C and forced them to turn private goods into standards.

In this time and space, the situation has not changed much. For example, this EB technology standardization meeting is the consequence of 3C suffering a loss on the HTML standard.

HTML language has not had a unified standard since Tim Berners-Lee created the first EB on August 6, 1991. In March 1995, 3c created a html  3.0 standard draft. Because the design was too complicated, Netscape put it on the shelf. Du Qiu also regarded it as nothing when writing ivie. Without the support of the browser, the draft became a mirror and no one cared about it.

3c was disappointed and had to announce the suspension of the development of the 3.0 draft, and then sent an invitation letter to make an appointment with Netscape, Snapdragon, Microsoft, American Online and other Internet-related companies to hold a meeting in Mountain View from September 11 to 13 to discuss setting new standards.

The classic British political satire drama "Yes, Ministers" says that the United Nations has no leader, many people talk, and becomes more trivial, and ends up accomplishing nothing. The 3c is almost the same. After the opening of the standardization meeting on September 11, he was arguing about grammar design, and sometimes he was nitpicking about details, making a mess, and Du Qiu watched coldly and shook his head secretly.

World Wide Web was born in August 1991 and was established on October 3c in 1994. During these three years and two months, no authoritative organization has come forward to set standards. At the same time, millions of web pages have appeared on the Internet, most of which are published by beginners or hobbyists. These people have low programming skills and no standards for reference. The quality of the code they write can be imagined.

3c wants to standardize EB technology, which is a great thing that benefits the present and the future. However, most of the people who set the standards come from the academic community, crazily pursue rigorous, concise and elegant programming styles. They want to take a purification action on the Internet and force all pages to meet the unified standards.

This idea seems beautiful academically, but it is completely unfeasible in business, because all web pages on the Internet currently do not meet the standards. If the browsers of Netscape and Snapdragon cannot read these pages, then there are only two endings: either the publisher of the web page changes the source code, or the visitor of the web page changes the browser.

Thinking about it with your toes, you also know that the ending is definitely the latter, because the cost of changing the browser is much lower than the cost of modifying the source code. Therefore, in order to protect your business interests, Netscape and Snapdragon will never agree with the standardized plan of disregarding reality and talking about it on paper. It is difficult for the academic community to accept the current ugly, chaotic and bloated Internet situation. The two sides have a sharp opposition in their positions, so it would be strange if they don’t make a fuss!

Not only Du Qiu was unhappy, but Mark Anderson from Netscape was also unhappy. On the evening of September 11, he invited Du Qiu to a steak restaurant and suggested: "Auto, these people only understand technology and do not understand business. The standards set are unrealistic and difficult to promote. It is better for us to leave them behind, join forces with other companies to form an alliance, and set standards by ourselves."

Build a self-built alliance, self-defined standards are very efficient, but they are easily divided due to interests, or are hostile to other manufacturers, making the entire Internet industry even more chaotic. This kind of thing happened in the original history. Browser manufacturers such as Apple, Firefox and Opera have left 3c and formed Hatg. The internal struggle between the two sides has caused the html language to stagnate for more than ten years and cannot develop. Du Qiu did not want to repeat the same mistake and shied away: "The meeting in total is only the first day today, so don't worry, I will take out the proposal we have discussed tomorrow to see how the effect is."

"Then I wish you success." Mark Anderson raised his wine glass and persuaded again: "The merger of AUTU, Snapdragon and Netscape will be good for both parties. Why do you have to insist on financing? If you are not satisfied with the price, we can talk again."

After Chen Dayou released the fake news that Microsoft was preparing to purchase Snapdragon for $500 million, Netjing was indeed fooled. He had frequent contact with Du Qiu in the past few days and tried his best to merge the two companies, with a price of up to $550 million, but the cash was only 50 million, and the rest was paid in stock.

This proposal is very tempting because Netscape's stock price is at a low level at this time. Once the two companies merge, the stock price will definitely soar. Maybe in just a few days, $550 million will double, which is faster than robbing the bank.

But Du Qiu still declined and said: "Mark, Snapdragon is a test product I created to promote the concept of open source software. It is not suitable for Netscape."

"Clark never interferes with Netscape's operations. After the merger, you will be the second largest shareholder of the company and will also serve as CTO. You have unquestionable power in R&D, and you can also promote the concept of open source software."

"If I open source netscape-navigator, the investors who hold Netscape stocks will kill me." Du Qiu cut a small piece of steak and changed the topic with a smile: "Mark, you are not a qualified lobbyist, but an excellent investor. We will have many opportunities to cooperate in the future."

"Hope so."

On the second day of the meeting, Du Qiu tore off the disguise of talking less and listening to more the day before, pretending to be a pig and eating tiger, holding a thick stack of proposals, and wandering among the discussion groups in the attitude of Zhuge Liang fighting against scholars, with an eloquence and full firepower. In just one day, 17 of the 23 topics lost the significance of the discussion.

There are three reasons why the effect is so ideal. First, Du Qiu is very active on the Internet in the past six months. Not only does he have new papers or technology releases every week, but he also takes time to answer questions and consultations from netizens around the world. His reputation and popularity are increasing day by day. He has become the iconic figure in the Internet industry second only to Tim Berners-Lee, with a lot of voice.

Secondly, the proposal written by Du Qiu has future mature standards for reference. Although some of the content was deleted for commercial reasons, it is still much higher than the proposals of others. In the face of absolute strength, the debate is meaningless.

The last reason is because of Du Qiu's special identity. The business community thinks that he is the founder of Snapdragon and will consider business. The academic community thinks that he is an advocate of open source software and will consider academically. He is an intermediate coordinator that can be accepted by both camps.

On the third day of the meeting, after a whole day of closed-door consultations, with the strong support of Netscape CTO Mark Anderson and American Online Ceo Steve Case, the organizing committee finally released the "3c  1995 Annual Technical Conference White Paper", announcing that based on the joint proposals of Snapdragon and Netscape, three standards for formulating and promoting HTML  3.1, Iscript  1.1 and CSS  1.0.

If the original time and space are used as the reference system, the successful holding of this conference has pushed the development of web technology by 2 years and reached the level in 1997. This is only an academic consideration. If business factors are considered, the impact will be even greater. In short, Du Qiu has avoided many detours in the Internet industry, but it has also changed history and a new future.

Chen Dayou was not interested in technical standards and was busy dealing with the company's financing. It was not until the meeting ended on September 13 that he hurried over and showed his face at the buffet dinner. He brought Du Qiu to the corner and asked, "What impact do these three standards have on Microsoft's I?"

"There is no impact for the time being, and the new standard will take at least three to six months to promote."

"What if the standard is promoted?"

"I will become very unstable because many of the features in the new standard do not support and cannot be parsed." Du Qiu said while eating the food on the plate: "According to convention, Microsoft will release the upgrade package of indos  95 at the end of the year. If they want to upgrade IE, you can open a high price."

"Add them to upgrade?"

"Microsoft is an elephant, we are ants." Du Qiu gestured for a moment and said, "We will have a greater chance of winning until the Snapdragon International is launched."

"When it comes to listing, I met Jennifer again today. She suggested that we change Snapdragon International to ivie, saying that this is more recognizable. I think it makes sense. Many listed companies in the United States use their products as their names, such as Coca-Cola, HP, etc. Netscape did the same thing at the beginning. They first called mosaic, and after the netscape browser became popular, they simply used it as the company name."

"The company name doesn't matter, you decide."
