Chapter 30: The Future of Almani (5)

Ella and Alfred looked at each other.

"Well, pull the curtain up," said Ella, "Let me hear what he is going to say."

The curtain was pulled up, and to Ella's slightly surprised that the ordinary priests who followed the Red Priests also consciously retreated outside the curtain.

Then only Ella, Amy, Alfred, and the priest in red were left in the curtain.

"You are a little different from the clergy in the Abraham Church I have met." Ella said. "For you who serve God, it should be the most important thing to bring pagans back to the right path. But why do you say that this is just a saying that only those who are 'uninformed in the world' will have?"

"It's not the same?" The priest in red sneered, "No, I think everyone is the same. It's fine to believers at the bottom, if there are any high-powered priests as you said..."

He pointed at his head:

"Then there must be something wrong with his place."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because you are pagans, and this is your base camp." The priest in red said with a rough voice. "In the base camp of pagans, their God is evil, and our God is righteous. Isn't that sending his face to be beaten? He has to say what kind of people he faces. Doctrines are used when debating with his peers, and you are all worldly lords. What is important for you is the benefit of converting faith--are you?"

"You are so honest." Alfred said coldly, "The priests I met will at least use words to modify their practices."

"I don't know the red tape." The priest in red laughed again, "But, be more open-minded, both sides are more relaxed, right?"

Amy frowned slightly when she heard this. She didn't like this priest very much, she knew that the same was true for Ella. Ella had some respect for Gregory, but the priest in front of her was no different from the vulgar priests of Constantineer. She knew that Ella hated such priests, even more so than those nobles who opposed her policies. The nobles could sometimes help, but those priests were really useless except for collecting tributes and interfering with government affairs.

However, she found that there was no turbulence on Ella's face, and she didn't know what she was thinking.

"Tell me about it," Ella said, "what will we do?"

"You are all discerning people, and you should all know that the Tianfang Empire is the most powerful country on this continent." The priest in red said, "If you convert to the Orthodox Church of Abraham and have the same clan and family as us, you will be regarded as our friends, not enemies. Isn't such a benefit enough?"

Alfred glared at the priest in red: "Are you threatening us?"

"How could this be a threat? We are just here to make friends." The priest in red said, "Is Guibang unwilling to be friends with the Tianfang Empire?"

"The premise is that you have to convert to your religion—or, it's the enemy, right?"

The red-clothed priest said without changing his face: "Please don't think that this is a condition imposed on you, the Knights of Britain. To be fair, even if we do not consider our relationship with our Tianfang Empire, just by influence in China, converting us to our trust will bring you great benefits."

"I can't see any benefit," said Alfred, "all I see is the opposition of the nobles and the turmoil in the country."

"Of course, this will bring some small problems to the country in the early stages. Many nobles will be strongly opposed, and the original priests of your country will probably make a fuss with you for this - but it is easy to suppress these objections with your reputation as the King of Knights, right?"

"Why should I face these objections for you?"

"Because this is an opportunity, a huge opportunity. Indeed, there will be a small number of diehards who will oppose it - but your people, the vast majority, will like it very much and embrace the Abraham Church. And you stand on the side of the majority. Using this, you can successfully attack political enemies and further concentrate power. Isn't this what every king dreams of?"

"Why will the vast majority of my people like you Abraham Church?"

"It must be so. King of Knights, you must understand that the church of Abraham is different from any other religion in the world. As early as those churches who worship the devil used the living people as sacrifices, we wrote the forbidden sacrifices into the scriptures. Our scriptures say that our God replaced the children of his loyal believers with a sheep, and he was so kind."

The priest in red stood up and walked while stating:

"I can say for sure and precisely that in your territory religion is just the props for priests to gather wealth. Anyone, whether it is a lord, aristocrat, a merchant, a craftsman, or a peasant, needs to spend a sum of money to enjoy religious services. Money worshiping gods requires money, money to join the church organization, money to purchase religious supplies, money to ask the priests to come to see the people in their families, but in the Abraham Orthodox Church, these services are free. I know that there are many poor people who first joined the church, just because they were baptized.

When we get a free white garment. Not only that, we also provide low-interest loans for the poor, adopt orphans without fathers and give charitable food to the homeless. Your priests are high and often look down on the poor, but in the Abraham church, all of them are brothers and sisters. If someone is sick, we will pray for them—free; if someone dies of old age, we will worship them—free; our scriptures even say, "It is easy for the poor to go to heaven, but it is harder for the rich to go to heaven than a camel through the eye of a needle." This is our Abraham church."

"Then where does the funds of your church come from? Did your God transform it to you out of thin air?"

"We have our own land and our own industries, and we can fully reliance on our own. Of course, some devout believers will donate funds, provided they have ample hands and we will never force them to donate."

As he said these words, the priest in red always had a kind smile on his face, which made his words more convincing.

But Alfred didn't buy it. He looked at the priest in red and sneered:
