Chapter 29 Clips

"What do you think of Luo Dayou?"

"What aspect do you want to ask?" Chen Chong sat in the passenger seat, looked at the beautiful side of Chang Ai Jia and said, "His music or his person?"

"Is it necessary to divide it so much?"

"Okay." Chen Chong said in a gentle voice: "He is a musical genius, but he is not suitable to be your boyfriend."

"Oh?" Chang Aijia glanced at Chen Chong and asked, "Why?"

"All geniuses who have achieved success in art are relatively fragile. They need a gentle woman who reads at night with Hongxiu Tianxiangxiang. You are not."

"What am I?"

"You are a tough woman who is ready to work overtime at night."

Zhang Aijia laughed loudly when she heard this. She forced herself to park her car on the side of the road and leaned on the steering wheel and couldn't breathe.

After a while, Zhang Aijia calmed down. She was still lying on the steering wheel, and asked Chen Chong with her head tilted, "Then what kind of man is suitable for a woman like me?"

"I am like this." Chen Chong said righteously.

"So shameless." Chang Aijia smiled again, "You are also a weak scholar with thin arms and thin legs. Are you afraid of a tough woman like me?"

"A civilized society depends on the brain, not the fist." Chen Chong smiled, opened the car door, and said, "Sister Zhang, the moonlight is good tonight, come down and have a walk."

As one of the "Four Asian Tigers", Taiwan has rapidly evolved from an agricultural society to an industrial society after its economy has taken off, and various infrastructure projects have started. The whole Taipei is like a large construction site with tower cranes, and it seems to be many mainland cities in the 21st century.

It was midnight at night, and there was no car on the road, empty and very quiet. The bright moon was bright and the night wind blew, which made people feel refreshed.

"A Chong." Zhang Aijia hugged her arms and followed Shen Chong, taking a slow walk. She asked, "Why are I said to be a tough woman? Am I very fierce?"

"That's just an inappropriate analogy." Chen Chong touched his nose and said, "You are a very independent and modern urban woman on the surface, different from a traditional woman."

“What’s the difference?”

"Traditional women take care of their husbands and children, live for others, and urban women pursue careers and live for themselves."

Sylvia Chang was silent, lowered her head and kicked a small stone. After a while, she asked again: "You said I am an urban woman on the surface, which means I am actually a traditional woman?"

"No, this is not a problem of either one or the other." Chen Chong shook his head and said, "Sister Zhang, you are talented, but you have no direction, like a small boat without a compass."

He pointed to the tall buildings in the distance, and then the farmland and vegetable fields behind him, saying, "Look, there is a bright light over there, a modern city, and a dark place here, a traditional pastoral farm. You stand in the middle of the road, yearning for a free life over there, but traditional forces are everywhere, just like the night, which makes you unable to move. You are a woman sandwiched between modern and traditional, swaying left and right."

Zhang Aijia bit her lip and stared at Chen Chong in a daze.

"Sister Zhang, no one understands you except me." Chen Chong pointed to himself and said, "I am a car that can drive you to a beautiful new world."

...

After returning from Taipei, Chen Chong rushed to the Hong Kong printing company as soon as possible to start the post-production of "Crazy Job".

The editing of "Crazy Joe" in his previous life was criticized, so when the filming was about to end, Chen Chong asked Anh Hsu to contact Tan Jiaming and invited him to make the final editing of "Crazy Joe".

Tan Jiaming was the leader of Ann Hui when she worked in the TVB Film Group. She was serious and verbally speaking. Although both of them were not working at TVB now, Ann Hui was a little scared of him. She was forced by Chen Chong. She called with a try-and-see attitude, but she didn't expect Tan Jiaming to agree. (Note 1)

Tan Jiaming is recognized as the most talented director in the Hong Kong film new wave. His editing skills are particularly outstanding. Chen Chong naturally cannot waste such a good learning opportunity. He specially arranged the post-production of "Crazy Job" after he returned from Taipei.

Movie editing, simply put, is to transcribe all the required materials onto the operation tape, and then use the editing machine to edit the materials into a movie.

The editing machine generally has two monitors, two video recorders, and an operating table. The monitor and video recorder are convenient for the editor to see the effects, and the operating table is convenient for the editor to accurately reach each frame during editing.

In 1979, digital products were not yet developed, and the films shot can only be edited in linearly. As the name suggests, linear represents order and is not convenient to change. If you want to change a place, all the shots after it need to be started again.

Chen Chong printed all the shots into work samples. The rich materials made Tan Jiaming overjoyed. He was having fun cutting them all over the place, which opened Chen Chong's eyes.

Speaking of which, editors' status in the Hong Kong film industry is similar to that of screenwriters, and their power has been greatly occupied by directors. Many Hong Kong films are hand-cut by directors. However, in Hollywood, few directors have hand-cut films themselves, and generally cooperate with editors.

These two different modes have their own advantages and disadvantages. The director edits himself to maximize the artistic unity of the movie, while the editor can look at the movie itself from another perspective.

Editing can magically make a movie more perfect presentation, and it is also an art itself. How to arrange and combine many materials into a wonderful story is a profound science. Not every director can master such skills. Moreover, directors often have obsessions with the shots they shoot and are reluctant to let go. The authorities are confused, and the effect is not good.

As far as Chen Chong knows, according to the normal rules of Hollywood, editors generally cannot appear on the shooting site, they can only see the final material, and prevent the director's decision during the shooting from affecting the final editing of the film.

Chen Chong prefers the division of labor model in Hollywood. The director has too much power and it is not necessarily a good thing to have good quality of the movie.

Tan Jiaming is old and has good level. He is the main one, and Anhua is the assistant. He cooperates very well. The editing progresses quite smoothly. After more than ten days of hard work to get up early and go to bed late, he finally completed the rough cutting.

The roughly edited version of "Crazy Journey" was more than two hours. Chen Chong read it carefully. Although the overall atmosphere was insufficient due to the lack of soundtrack, the narrative was smooth and the style was sharp. The quality was significantly higher than that of "Crazy Journey" in his memory. He couldn't help but be overjoyed and praised Tan Jiaming's editing skills.

"His photo was good. Mr. Chen, you have left so much material. If you can't cut it well, I will have no shame to make a living." Tan Jiaming himself was also very satisfied. His poker face rarely smiled and said, "This is the best work I have cut."

"I can't believe that this is something I took." Ann Xu was also very excited. She thanked Chen Chong again, "Thanks to Mr. Chen's strong support."

After the rough cut was completed, Chen Chong deliberately opened the system and looked at the trial task schedule. It was 88%. I guess he had finished the soundtrack and edited it into the final version. Even if the trial was done, he would be done.

Ann Hui invited Lin Minyi to make the soundtrack. After a few days, she tried to record two paragraphs, but the effect was not very good. Although she had good arrangement skills, she did not have the experience of giving the movie the soundtrack and could not set off the suspense and tense atmosphere the movie wanted.

Moreover, Lin Minyi is about to go to Singapore to hold a piano solo performance, so she can't spend too much time and energy to re-sound the movie.

After thinking about it, Chen Chong called Zhang Aijia from Taipei and asked her to take action and asked Luo Dayou to help put out the fire.

Luo Dayou's musical talent is undoubtedly. He has created several songs for the movie "Shining Days" before, so he should have some experience in the movie soundtrack.

In Shen Chong's memory, Luo Dayou has made music for many movies, such as "The Wrong Car", "The Flowers on the Sea", "Alang's Story", "Rolling Red Dust", etc., with different styles, but they are all very outstanding. He was particularly impressed by Luo Dayou's soundtrack for "The Underworld". He could still make music that fits the movie style when he was old. There was no reason for his youth to make music that meets the requirements of "Crazy Job".

I don’t know if it was Sylvia Chang’s charm or if Luo Dayou was very interested in the movie soundtrack, but the next day, he and Sylvia Chang came to Hong Kong together.

Chen Chong called Rover over as a driver and went to Kai Tak Airport to greet him.

Luo Dayou was much more enthusiastic than when he met last time. It may be because he heard Chen Chong's praise of his musical talent. However, he was not good at speaking and said a few scenes, and then he became quiet.

"A Chong, how about the movie?" Chang Ai Jia couldn't wait to ask, "Have the shots I took used?"

"I used some, and the movie was very exciting." Chen Chong said with her luggage. "Sister Zhang, I think this movie will become your representative work."

"Really?" Chang Aijia raised his eyebrows and said, "Go away quickly, take me to see."

After watching the roughly cut sample, Chang Aijia was also very satisfied. This movie is different from any of the films she filmed before. The story is compact and the picture style is unique, giving people a refreshing feeling.

"Dayou, what do you think of this movie?" After watching the sample, Chang Aijia asked Luo Dayou.

"It looks very good and exciting." Luo Dayou deserves to be a music genius. He said: "I have some ideas. Give me a few days to do a DEMO first."

Of course, the movie soundtrack is not Luo Dayou's life alone. Ann Hui has the most say in which to add music wherever he wants.

Chen Chong knew nothing about music and couldn't help at all. He found the best hotel and rented the best music recording studio, providing all the best hardware facilities so that Luo Dayou could create with peace of mind.

We had a dinner together in the evening, welcomed Luo Dayou, and then on the way to send Chang Aijia back, Chen Chong heard another good news.

"A Chong, when I finish filming "Legend of the Mountain", I will go to work in your company." (Note 2)

"Think about it?"

"I didn't think about it." Sang Ai Jia gave a blank look and said, "I just want to see where you, a small car that you can't drive, can take me."
