Chapter 28: Alsos and the Manhattan Project

Fourth update

———

As the world's first practical swept-wing jet, the me262 itself is already a great innovation, but similarly, researchers, including designer Willie Messer Schmidt, have only maintained the swept-wing angle to a very conservative standard, which is far from the design of mainstream fighter jets in the 21st century.

Similarly, the forward swept wing was proposed at the same time. In 1943, the German Junkers research team was ordered to develop a heavy bomber that could surpass any Allied fighter aircraft. The first point was to combine swept wing + jet engine, but this design scheme had the disadvantages of being difficult to operate when flying at low speeds, and the design team proposed the forward swept wing.

Due to the limitations of the technical level at that time, the technical problems of the forward swept wing could not be completely solved, so it did not develop further. After the end of World War II, swept wings developed greatly, and various swept wing aircraft appeared one after another, showing blowout development.

The researchers' improvements to me262 are mostly based on the original design and do not involve fundamental changes, so it is relatively easier.

The me262's air gun caliber is larger than that of conventional fighters, reaching 30mm and 80 rounds per minute. Before the emergence of the me262, the bf109's gun caliber was mainly 15mm and 20mm, and even the excellent work - the fw190 has a 20mm caliber.

At the high speed of the me262, it is not suitable for fighting. Often, they run away after shooting. Under the attack of large-caliber machine cannons, the b17, known as the "air fortress", was under great threat. The previous 20mm cannon did not completely lose its combat effectiveness, while the me262 changed the previous trend and posed a new threat.

The American p51 Mustang is the most outstanding fighter jet in the late World War II. It has its own advantages and the me262. The me262 pilots play to their strengths and avoid their weaknesses, and often adopt the "dive-attack" tactic. They go with one blow and do not fight with other aircraft. Under such conditions, the me262's own high speed has an advantage and can get rid of the p51.

But relatively speaking, the technology of me262 is not mature because of mechanical failures and ground losses. More than those shot down in battle.

Of course, these things are unknown to Colonel Filming. Although he did not think that me262 was omnipotent, it did not stop me262 from giving him strong confidence. The same was true for Hitler. This high-speed jet aircraft may cause disintegration once it falls into dive, so the aircraft is not allowed to dive and drop bombs, but only horizontal bombs. In this way, the error of bomb drop can reach 1-2 kilometers. It is simply terrible.

"Sir, I think you should be more courageous. Look at its beautiful body, it will definitely be a nightmare for Allied bombers!"

Seeing Colonel Filming like this, the researcher had no choice but to compromise and stop talking. At this time, Zhang Yang asked him for the documents in his hand, which contained a large amount of data, including the comparison of data before and after the improvement.

Colonel Film expressed his acquiescence to Zhang Yang's actions, while Bucky on the other side looked at Zhang Yang's actions in fear. He knew that this information must be detailed information about this plane, but Zhang Yang actually held it in his hand with a big thorn, which made him feel a little ashamed.

He has a good marksmanship and knows German. Bucky looked at Zhang Yang with a faint feeling of admiration.

It's no wonder that after staying on the battlefield for a long time, I can feel the degree of personal weakness. A guy with strong combat power is very eye-catching. The Super Soldier Plan formulated by the US government also has this intention. After the appearance of Captain America, the US government printed a large number of Captain America comics and sent them to the soldiers on the front line. I don't know how many young soldiers were all watching Captain America comics after dinner and spent the hard years. (This plot is available in the movie)

After carefully reading the information, Zhang Yang recorded the things on it and then returned them to the white coat.

"How does it feel?"

Film looked at Zhang Yang, obviously very interested in Zhang Yang's opinions.

"Yeah, it's very powerful, especially the speed is very fast. I look forward to the day when it flies into the sky." Zhang Yang praised a few words.

Colonel Filming laughed: "Major, I firmly believe in this! According to calculations, even the Americans' p51 cannot catch up with it, we are ahead of the Americans."

Zhang Yang nodded and agreed with this. Both the German and the US military are competing for technology and talents. Whoever can take the lead in developing cross-age technology will have the opportunity.

Historically, the Americans launched the Manhattan Project in 1942, recruited a large number of Allied scientists, and finally successfully created an atomic bomb, opening up the era of human nuclear weapons. The two atomic bombs, "fat man" and "little boy", were all dropped on the Japanese mainland.

A light flashed in Zhang Yang's mind, and he suddenly remembered something!

"Atomic bomb, atomic bomb..."

These words kept jumping and colliding in Zhang Yang's mind, and finally burst into dazzling sparks.

"I said I forgot something, it turned out that I forgot this, that was the atomic bomb!" Zhang Yang's eyes were burning.

It was said earlier that the United States launched the "Manhattan Project" in 1942, and the team of scientists led by Oppenheimer tried their best to be the first to create an atomic bomb, winning the victory of World War II.

However, under the technical conditions at that time, it was not only the United States that could create atomic bombs, but also the United States' opponent, Nazi Germany.

Don’t forget that Germany’s scientific research level in World War II was quite advanced and was not much worse than that of the United States. The biggest difference between the two sides lies in the opposition between morality and justice. After the United States started the Manhattan Project, Germany was also conducting a similar plan, which was also conducting research on nuclear weapons.

At that time, German scientists Hahn, Heisenberg and others were as famous as Einstein. With the industrial production capacity of the entire Europe, the Germans could develop atomic bombs. So in order to clarify the progress of German nuclear weapons research, at the end of 1943, the US side established a special intelligence team code-named "Arsos". The members came from the US Army and Navy intelligence systems, and the captain was Colonel Pashi.

After convening the personnel, the US side formulated three combat tasks for "Arsos": one is to capture German nuclear physicists; the second is to seize uranium metal and ore from the hands of the Germans; and the third is to take the opportunity to destroy all industrial facilities that Germany may use for the atomic bomb program.

Together with the Alsos intelligence team, there is also Danish physicist Gordesmit, because Gordesmit not only meets the above conditions, but also speaks fluent French and German. He especially knows many German scientists and is quite good with the German nuclear physicist Heisenberg, the Americans want to get. Moreover, Gordesmit did not participate in the "Manhattan Project", so that even if he was captured by the German army, he would not tell the secret of the United States making atomic bombs.

In December 1943, "Arsos" sent Major Carlford to London. He first looked up all recent and expired physics magazines in Germany, and asked all European physicists who fled to the United States, such as Einstein and Fermi, and then published a list of 50 scientists who were likely to participate in the development of Germany's nuclear technology.

In June 1944, the 5th Army of the United States captured Rome, and the members of "Arsos" were also concentrated there. Each of them had this list of German scientists' resumes, addresses and work locations. However, due to the continuous bombing of the Allied forces, many German scientists were missing. Therefore, finding out where Nazi Germany hid these scientists and what they were doing as soon as possible became the biggest problem facing "Arsos".

Soon, "Arsos" received an intelligence. According to a Swiss scientist, Dr. Heisenberg, the most famous nuclear physicist in Germany, lived near Hesingen, and there were other German scientists in this area.

In March 1945, Alsos captured Hahn and Lloyd, the German major scientists in atomic energy research near Heidelberg in the town of Hessingen. However, Heissenberg had not been caught yet, which was what Alsos was most worried about. On May 2, Alsos secretly entered the town of Ulfeld, and Heissenberg was captured in the house. The next day, the intelligence team brought an infantry battalion and rushed to the residence of Heissenberg to take the scientist away. At this point, the "Arsos" intelligence team successfully captured more than 20 German nuclear physicists one by one. It was not until this time that the Americans breathed a sigh of relief. Because in their opinion, catching a Heissenberg was much more important than destroying ten German divisions.

By the end of World War II, the "Arsos" intelligence team brought thousands of scientists and engineers from Germany and Italy to the United States through various means. In October 1945, "Arsos" was officially disbanded. The scientists who were "snatched" by "Arsos" played an immeasurable role in the development of American disciplines such as atomic physics, nuclear physics, chemistry and mathematics.

And this Alsos is something that Zhang Yang almost ignored before, because the Hydra officer he replaced was to protect a Nazi physicist into Germany.
