Additional Notes on the Power of Modern Airstrikes
It seems that some comrades believe that air-to-ground weapons are toys in front of large-caliber artillery, and they also believe that senior generals from other worlds should be able to withstand air strikes. So, what is the actual situation?
First, let’s take a look at which air-to-ground weapons or the so-called “large-caliber artillery” is more powerful.
Take the 155 howitzer as an example. One shell weighs less than 50kg, the killing radius of one shell is about 50 meters and the range is only about 40 kilometers. This is the real lethality of the so-called "large-caliber artillery". What? Do you think of a larger artillery? It is a fortress cannon that cannot be moved at all and has long been eliminated.
So, what about air-to-ground weapons?
First of all, it must be clear that fighter jets never use so-called "missiles" to attack ground targets - many comrades are confused by the game. In fact, there are only three types of missiles among air-to-ground weapons:
One is an anti-tank missile, which is hung on attack aircraft such as A-10, and is used to perform cas missions and deal with enemy tank clusters.
The second is air-launched anti-ship missiles and long-range air-to-ground missiles outside the defense zone, which are hung on common multi-mission tactical fighters such as F-16, and are used to strike the enemy outside the range of enemy air defense missiles - generally used to strike air defense systems. Since the cost-effectiveness of missiles is far less than that of bombs, this weapon is only suitable for killing targets when the enemy has air defense - generally used to attack enemy air defense systems or warships with air defense cover
The third is an air-launched strategic cruise missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers. There are only three types of tomahawks, kh-55 and long sword-10 in the world. They are hung on strategic bombers and used to carry out large-scale strategic strikes against the enemy.
From this we can see that the so-called "missiles" are not the main air-to-ground weapons at all. The main force of air-to-ground is various aviation bombs.
The total weight of aviation bombs is generally large, of which 30 to 40% are loading, so the power of aviation bombs is quite amazing. A general armored transport vehicle can only resist 155mm grenade fragments that explode 10 meters away. These grenades generally weigh 30 to 45 kilograms. If 250 kilograms of ordinary killer bombs explode 10 meters away from the target of the armored vehicle, the personnel inside the transport vehicle will be killed or severely damaged. Using specially designed aircraft bombs can more effectively kill their intended targets. For example, the fragments of my country's old 100-2 aviation explosive bombs can penetrate 30mm of homogeneous armored steel plates at 10 meters, and the protection level of the top armor on the sides of most tanks is lower than this value. Therefore, at present, the main factor affecting the effectiveness of aircraft bombs is the accuracy of bombs, rather than the power of the bomb itself.
In fact, the Mi Jun's F-15e can carry at least four MK84 unguided aviation bombs (or JDA-guided bombs based on this model). The MK84 nominally weighs 2,000 pounds (908 kg), and the actual weight depends on the fuse, reduction device and the wing kit, between 1,972 pounds (896 kg) and 2,083 pounds (947 kg). The steel streamlined shell contains 945 pounds (429 kg) tritonal (a mixture of 80% t·n·t explosives and 20% aluminum combustion agent) high explosives.
After the mk84 bomb explodes, it will form a crater of 50 feet (15.2 meters) wide and 36 feet deep (11 meters) deep. Depending on the throwing height, it can penetrate up to 15 inches (380 cm) thick metal plates or 11 feet (3.3 meters) thick concrete, and produce fatal fragments that scatter 400 yards (366 meters) in size.
As for range, the attack range of the jdam series is generally 24 kilometers, but multi-purpose tactical fighters of the F-15e level generally have a strike radius of thousands of kilometers - in other words, the strike radius of air-to-ground weapons is much larger than that of artillery.
In other words, the artillery was completely exploded by air-to-ground weapons in terms of the two hard indicators of range and lethality. The advantages of artillery are low cost, short response time, and good firepower sustainability. So, comrades who "cannons are stronger than bombs" should forget it...
