Chapter 4 A Difficult Beginning (2)

Several major survival items: food, clothing, housing and transportation.

Jinkola was in a bad mood. The reason was that the committee "does not pay attention to the extremes of agricultural work". Food is the most important thing for the people. They don't think of ways to solve the problem of food first, but they make bricks and cement and other things, and they spend nothing. In his opinion, this is all because the committee is full of "contractors and bureaucrats" who "do not understand science". In another month, the soybean planting season in South America will be entered. The 200 bags of Northeast soybeans in the cargo hold are well preserved and can be sown as seeds. The land here is so fertile, it is completely uncultivated virgin land, and the harvest will definitely be good next year.

Until noon yesterday, he was ambitious to do a big move. He burned wasteland, reclaimed land, dug ditches, explained the characteristics of soybeans to his subordinates, and trained agricultural knowledge. He was very busy.

Unfortunately, all this ended at noon on October 7. Ma Ganzu, a "idler", took away most of his hands from him on the excuse of mining limestone. Before the lime kiln was visible, he started mining limestone first. This made him almost pissed his nose.

"It's all shit!" Jinkola spat hard on the ground, and continued to turn the fields awkwardly with the pickaxe. "I can't even make a farm tool, I don't understand science at all."

"Captain, these acres of land have been watered. Can you sow the seeds?" Zheng Bin, a high school student with acne on his face, ran over and asked with his face raised.

Zheng Bin is a young man who is quite a real person and does whatever he wants to do. Jinkola still likes it.

"Well, that's OK. The acre of leeks on the left is the bag of black seeds. Don't take the wrong one. The acre of land with lime sprinkled on the right is planted with amaranth. Amaranth likes alkaline soil. Grandma's, lime is quite useful." Jin Kela muttered, "Two acres of land are sprinkled with wood ash. Remember, water leeks every two days, don't water amaranth. When my acre of land is well done, you can bring the seeds of the greens and we will plant them too."

"Oh, Lao Jin, it's quite like doing farm work." A young man wearing black-framed glasses came over with a smile, pushing his bicycle, "I didn't go to Agricultural University in vain."

"Go and go!" Jinkola said angrily, "Why are you from Languo here all the time? You built a biogas pool for me?"

"How is that possible?" Lan Guo, a man with glasses, smiled bitterly, "Here to give you a fence. There are many trees on the logging team that are not suitable for processing into plates. Member Liu asked me to pull you over and circle the seedlings first. These vegetable seeds are very important to us, and they are non-renewable resources in a short period of time. To put it bluntly, they are more important than people, so you have to take care of them carefully. Now, I have brought someone to build a fence for you. Your place is too far from the freighter, and Wang Qinian will bring people in tonight. He will be responsible for safety in the future."

"It's still Member Liu who understands science." Jin Kela held out and asked again, "When will the biogas pool be repaired? In the future, farming needs farm fertilizer."

"There is no material." Lan Guo spread her hands, "Although the committee has a little cement and bricks in her hand, Shao Shude was still shouting that there was not enough bricks to repair the chimney. How could he be distributed to other places? So, please wait for the first batch of bricks to burn in the brick kiln."

"It's not my turn to burn a few more batches of bricks." Jinkola was a little depressed. "House, toilet, canteen, bathhouse, office building, water diversion, reservoir, cement kiln, lime kiln or even wall repairs. Which one should not use brick cement, wait until the year of the monkey and horse."

The man in glasses smiled embarrassedly. He did not tell Jin Kela that not all the bricks and cement in the committee were given to Shao Shude to repair the kiln. Duncan, who had worked in the water plant for many years, was presided over the construction of a simple water purification facility under the "key care" of the committee.

At present, the main domestic water for travelers comes from several streams on the north bank of the river. The streams gather in a low-lying land to form a large wetland. The wetland is about 500 meters away from the river bank, with good water quality and considerable water volume. It is a bit far away, making it difficult to obtain water, and it is not very hygienic. Therefore, Duncan took the initiative to propose to the committee a plan to dig a drainage channel and build water purification facilities, which was quickly approved by the committee.

The committee not only transferred most of the construction team to him, but also called for a batch of precious cement and building materials. After a day of hard work yesterday, a sedimentation tank that was 25 meters long, 5 meters wide and 4 meters deep had been dug, and today it began to excavate the filter tank and reservoir.

The source of water intake is naturally a wetland stream. The stream water is introduced into the sedimentation tank through a water diversion channel with a length of about 100 meters. Since the groundwater level here is generally high, the canal is temporarily muddy and will be changed to brickwork after the conditions are improved. The water inlet and outlet of the sedimentation tank are blocked by wooden boards. After the slow flow of the stream water enters the sedimentation tank, the silt and sand in the water will naturally settle under the action of gravity, and then enter the filter tank through the water outlet.

The filter tank is divided into two layers, one layer is covered with coarse sand at the bottom, which is used to filter large suspended particles; the other layer is covered with fine sand at the bottom, which is used to filter small particles. The filtered water is stored in the reservoir. The reservoir is an open structure with wooden boards on it to prevent dust from falling and evaporating.

This purification measure is actually extremely primitive and simple. First of all, the water source lacks coagulation process, and when it finally comes out, there is still a disinfection process. However, in the current lack of alum and chlorine, this can only be achieved.

All three pools are reinforced concrete structures, and this project consumes a lot of steel bars and cement at the hands of the committee. However, it is related to the health of travelers, so no one has said anything.

Compared with the "luxury" materials used in water purification facilities, the construction of another people's livelihood project - the construction of public toilets is not satisfactory. The simple toilet built on the north bank of the river is really "simple". It is simply a pit dug on the ground, and a few wooden boards were laid on it, some reeds and thatch were laid on the top, and wooden boards were also separated from the men and women. There are no anti-leakage measures. Fortunately, there is a long way from the drinking water source, so there is no big problem. The health department regularly uses lime to disinfect it. After the formal toilet is built, the fate of waiting for this simple temporary toilet will be the fate of landfill.

************************************************

Shao Shude is now having a headache. He has tried his best to save bricks when he was working on the kiln, but now he found that the remaining bricks used to build chimneys are still insufficient. There is no way, so he can only build a mixed brick structure. If the bricks can save one piece, it is not enough. Then reduce the height of the chimney.

In his original plan, the chimney height of this small brick kiln was twenty meters. The height of twenty meters can ensure that there is enough pressure difference between the chimney and the bottom to facilitate the discharge of exhaust gas. Now it seems that this plan is unrealistic, and it seems that it will be as high as ten meters.

Now his subordinates have soared to 30 people. Except for the 10 people who built chimneys, the rest are all "playing with mud" to make bricks. In the morning, the construction team sent a few people to build some shacks for him with dry bricks and sent some rain cloth and thatch. The bricks cannot be exposed to the rain or sun, so they must be placed in the shacks and dry naturally. It is best to cover them with some thatch and rain cloth just in case.

The specifications of the bricks are 240×115×53mm (length×width×height). After taking back the clay, carefully remove the debris inside, then crush them with mature soil. After mixing the cooked soil with water, it is formed in a wooden mold, and then piled in the dryness of the shed. Each brick is separated by a certain distance and ventilated to make the moisture in the bricks easier to balance.

The bricks can usually be fired in the kiln after half a month of drying in the shade. With the small earth kiln established by Shao Shude, there are about 12,000 bricks at a time. Calculated by 3 days, the annual output is 1.4 million bricks. In fact, the production capacity cannot be so high. Due to various factors, if this kiln can produce 1 million bricks annually, Shao Shude will wake up in his dreams.

To build a house for travelers, a three-bedroom bungalow costs about 20,000 bricks, and a one-year production capacity is enough to build fifty houses. And now there are many places to use bricks, so it is impossible to build a house for travelers. Of course, the three-bedroom house is indeed too luxurious and the committee is unlikely to approve it.

"It seems that continuing to build more kilns and expand production capacity is the right way." Shao Shude sighed, "I hope the good weather in the past few days can be maintained so that I can also burn the first batch of bricks as soon as possible."

The work progress of the logging team today is indeed extremely slow. Many people have bubbles on their hands and swing their axes in pain. Coupled with the faint movements in the woods and the heart-wrenching barking of the wolf and the green dogs, everyone is nervous. Peng Zhicheng suspected that the Indians were spying on the time travelers, but he did not dare to search in depth, so he had to observe carefully and strengthen his vigilance. Fortunately, the woods are relatively sparse, and as long as he opens his eyes, he doesn't have to worry about anything.

A floating bridge was built between the two banks of the river with tall logs, and the large rows of logs were tied together with strong oil-soaked vines. There was no problem with the walking of more than a dozen or twenty people. Xiao Mingli and Liu Dafa carried a piece of wood and walked to the other side swaying. A few carpenters in the wood processing farm were working hard to process the boards. Basically, as soon as the boards were processed, they were immediately taken away by workers who were waiting to build simple wooden houses.

After most of the day, the simple wooden houses in the residential area increased to fifteen. The wooden houses were arranged in a tight line because this could save a wall of wood. A high lookout post stood behind the wooden house. A young man in a blue "Beiyang New Army" uniform was holding a telescope and observing the surroundings. The same lookout post was also being built on the south bank of the river, located between a brick kiln and a logging yard.
