Chapter VIII Great Construction (1)

On November 2, 1630, Xiaoyu. The West Indian Company's armed merchant ship Orange River had sailed a week ago. Before leaving, Captain Kuait politely suggested that he hoped to cross the crowd to build a formal dock so that he could be berthed next time.

In the past two days, the industrial zone on the south bank of Dayu River is in full swing, with papermaking workshops, cement kilns and lime kilns put into production one after another. Let’s not talk about papermaking workshops. Strictly speaking, these two earthen kilns are eliminated enterprises with low production capacity, high energy consumption and heavy pollution in modern times. However, the conditions for traveling through the crowds are limited, so they can only launch such earthen projects.

Both kilns are vertical barrel kilns, which work by feeding materials on the top and feeding materials on the bottom. The ingredients, grinding, feeding and feeding are all done manually. The design production capacity of cement kilns is 10 tons per day, and the design production capacity of lime kilns is 20 tons per day. Of course, this is a theoretical value that can only be achieved when the raw materials are sufficient and continuous production is continuous. The biggest problem of the travelers at present is labor shortage, especially the mining of limestone. One is the shortage of manpower, and the other is the lack of machinery and explosives, which rely entirely on manual mining. The efficiency is extremely low. Two or three tons can be mined when the luck is good, and not a ton when there is bad luck.

Under such circumstances, the cement kiln and lime kiln naturally had to produce and stop production. Tons of coal were consumed incredibly, and the little coal on the barge was not enough to last too long. In desperation, the Executive Committee temporarily shut down the two earthen kilns after producing some cement and lime solved the urgent need. After the limestone reached a certain reserve, it would ignite the production again.

Today is the monthly plenary meeting of the Executive Committee, and generally all matters are discussed.

"The successive production of brick kilns, cement kilns and lime kilns has given everyone great encouragement." Ma Qianzu, Chairman of the Executive Committee, made a generous speech at the meeting, "In the next period of time, we should continue to work hard to achieve greater breakthroughs on all fronts. Below, everyone will talk about the next work arrangements."

"Let me do it first. Some of the vegetable seeds sown last month have all emerged smoothly and are growing well. They can be transplanted smoothly in a while. Perhaps in the near future, there will be many delicious green leafy vegetables on our table." Agricultural Commissioner Jin Kela took the lead in speaking, "But this is not the point. I want to tell Chairman Ma and all members that it has entered November and officially entered the soybean planting season in South America. Due to various reasons,

The Agriculture Bureau (a subordinate agency directly under the Agriculture Committee) has not been sufficiently staffed, which has caused the farmland reclamation progress to be very unsatisfactory. As of yesterday, only 400 acres of farmland have been reclaimed. We currently have 200 bags of 5,000 kilograms of soybeans, and the initial estimate is that the sowing area is 1,000 acres. So I hope the Executive Committee can carefully consider the situation of the Agriculture Bureau with a scientific attitude, coordinate the relationship between various departments, and implement the Agriculture Bureau's reclamation plan as soon as possible."

After Jinkola said this, the members who were eager to try were immediately stopped. Indeed, this matter could not be delayed. The food brought will always be eaten up one day, and it is impossible for people traveling through time to spend so much time, so the focus of the work for the next period of time must be on the agricultural sector.

The other members have submitted their plans promptly, such as the trial production of refractory bricks proposed by industrial committee member Ma Vest; the construction of harbor docks, residential areas and industrial areas proposed by transportation committee member Xiao Bailang; the construction of red brick cement wall proposed by army committee member Peng Zhicheng; the construction of formal warehouses proposed by material committee member Shao Shude, etc.

Ma Ganzu then coordinated with everyone, and soon, a temporary army of 100 people was assigned to the Agriculture Bureau. At the same time, as a supporting project for the soybean planting area, irrigation canals were also required to be built at the same time.

As the saying goes, there are many people and great power. After the staff mobilized by the Executive Committee is in place, although most of them are novices, it only took 10 days to reclaim 1,000 acres of land on November 13.

At the same time, the hundreds of meters of brick cement irrigation channel leading from the stream wetland to the planting area was almost completed. Not only that, after obtaining sufficient bricks and cement mortar, the construction team's construction team built three biogas pools and a public toilet in one breath.

On November 15, soybean seeds officially began.

Soybeans contain 20% fat, 40% protein, 10% sugar, and are also rich in vitamins. They are also very widely used. In addition to oil pressing, they can also make soy milk, tofu, soy sauce, bean sprouts, soy meal, paint, glycerin, etc.

As the largest and most economical crop planted by the current travelers, the cultivation of soybeans has attracted many attention. Many women, elderly and even children came to help. As a result, by November 17, 1,000 acres of soybeans had been successfully sown, one day earlier than originally planned.

After finishing the major event of sowing, the Executive Committee began to carry out the second key project - the construction of the wharf.

Although the water depth of Dayu River is average, the offshore waters on both sides of the river estuary are excellent deep water areas, suitable for building a shore-style wharf. The entire port project currently formulated by the Executive Committee includes: underwater terrain survey, geological exploration, waterways, breakwaters, port roads, anchorages, warehouses, yards, trestles, lighthouses, forts, etc. The project volume is extremely large. Of course, the Executive Committee does not expect you to complete it in a short while.

The port is located on the north bank of Dayu River, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Underwater topography and geological surveys can directly apply the data from the 21st century, which is more convenient. Outside the port is a wide deep-water ocean surface with an average water depth of 8 meters. The seabed is sandy. Large ships can directly dock, which is an ideal anchorage. The only drawback is the lack of protection from natural breakwaters and requires manual construction.

The Construction Bureau (former construction team) under Xiao Bailang originally had 60 people, but this time he mobilized an additional 100 people to participate in the port construction. The planned port warehouse and yard were first started to be built. The warehouse was mainly large red brick bungalows, and the yard was behind the dock, with a depth of 200 meters and a usable area of 50,000 square meters, but in essence it was just a flat grassland. The Executive Committee plans to pour cement on the yard when conditions are available in the future.

The construction of the port road is also extremely important. The preliminary plan is to use waste from burning bricks to pave the road surface and then tighten it hard. Dig drains on the roadside, so as to avoid the bumps caused by softening of the road surface in rainy days. Similarly, after the material pressure is relieved, the Executive Committee will eventually convert the road into a cement road.

As for the construction of breakwaters, lighthouses and forts, we are really willing but not able to do it, so we can only leave it to the future.
