Chapter 32 West of the Great River (1)

"The Shifang Shop is here!" Captain Ventura shouted with a loud voice. ''

As soon as he finished speaking, a group of Ming people wearing cotton clothes and sweat towels wrapped around his head came over. Each of them held a large pocket in their hands and looked at the open-air grains, sorghum, corn and soybeans piled up in the cabin. The patrol officers responsible for maintaining order were lazy, and they saw them holding batons in their hands, bombarding some people who were too crowded back, and then stood there calmly, waiting for the order from their superiors.

"Okay, come one by one, only those who call their names can come. Anyone who squeezes and bumps around and disrupts order will be disqualified from the seed distribution." A middle-aged patrolman with an arm missing came over and said. He looked like a senior police officer. As he waved his hand, the two young patrolmen immediately trotted over and moved a small roadblock away, revealing a gap for two or three people to pass through, and then started to call the name with the roster.

This is a stone house, a settlement spontaneously formed during the expansion of the east coast people to the west. It is located on the north bank of the Yakui River, west of Trivenfort, east of Riopardo, and south of Valliverdi. It was originally a logging farm, with a few Irish people introduced by labor brokers, and Italians logged in order to obtain East Coast nationality after working for five years, and then be allocated land and houses.

Later, as more and more loggers were present, in order to solve the daily life problems here, the government rebuilt a simple dock on the river bank so that it could successfully park inland steamers that transport materials back and forth. After the fixed route of inland steamers was opened, the Ping'an County Government, who was in charge of the here, sent people to source materials locally here and built several rather impressive two-story houses with stones. They were both a management agency and a material warehouse, and they usually assumed the functions of a shop (selling daily necessities to lumberjacks to recycle currency), so they were affectionately called "stone house shop" by local loggers.

By May and June this year, the number of loggers in Shifangdian had reached more than 600, and a considerable part of the land on the river bank was cleared. Therefore, the Executive Committee simply decided to upgrade the logging farm to a settlement. It also notified the Immigration Department to include it in the new immigration distribution plan. As for the original logging farm, of course, it will continue to be retained. On the one hand, it cannot let these foreigners attracted by the East Coast Homestead Law lose their jobs, and on the other hand, it also needs to reserve land for the future development of towns. After all, in this primitive and wild place, there are only forests besides the river. If you want to have cultivated land that can feed all residents, don’t you have to ask for a way out from the forest?

Soon, the Immigration Department sent the last batch of more than 400 Ming people immigrants (mainly men) here; half a month later, more than 200 men and women from Livornia also settled here with their packages; early this month (October), 300 Polish female slaves were also sent to the dock. So far, the population of Shifangdian, the new settlement has soared to nearly a thousand (not stateless loggers), and its scale is not small.

On October 5, Shifangdian Township was included in the trusteeship scope of the upcoming Dingxi County (it was officially established on January 1, 1650, with five township-level administrative units, Dingxi Town, Pingxi Township, Rat Township, Takuli Township and Northern Botanical Garden, with the capital Dingxi Town). At the urging of the Ministry of Agriculture, the leadership team of the county, who was still under construction, also sent some staff from the agricultural technology station to Shifangdian Township to guide the farmers in the area who had missed autumn sowing to carry out spring sowing.

In addition, they also coordinated the transportation capacity and drew a ship to transport some supplies and good varieties here. This is why Captain Ventura's "Iyun 007" came to Shifangdian. After this ship, ships will come one after another within the next two days to transport a batch of fertilizer to Shifangdian Township. According to the latest requirements of the Ministry of Agriculture of the East Coast, all cultivated land across the country must be fertilized. If no fertilizer is applied, predatory planting will be carried out, which may be possible

They will be fined. Once this regulation is issued, the prices of livestock fertilizer, human manure, bean cakes, sesame oil, black beans, fried suzi, pig blood, stove soil, ash, ponds, rivers and silt on the east bank have risen across the board, and farmers from all over the country are rushing to buy these fertilizers. As a newly developed territory, Shifangdian Township naturally has to follow national policies. Therefore, the Dingxi County Government squeezed out a part of its quota and transported it to Shifangdian for sale to local farmers.

In addition to fertilizers sold to them, there are also a batch of good varieties just cultivated by the Northern Botanical Garden. These seeds are good varieties cultivated by the garden in recent years. After trial planting in other places, they found that the yield is good, so they began to be promoted in agricultural important places such as the Yazi Lake Basin.

Speaking of improving old agricultural and animal husbandry varieties and proliferating excellent varieties, the Northern Botanical Garden has spent a lot of effort in recent years. They have set up many experimental fields and nurseries to simulate various soil environments - such as lack of certain elements or different degrees of salinization - for planting experiments. At the same time, they also undertake the responsibility of hybrid breeding and domesticating foreign crops. In general, the work has been well done and many results have been produced, which is worthy of their current monthly funding of more than 15,000 yuan.

Among the improved seeds in the Northern Botanical Garden, the most important one is the improvement of grains and soybeans. Among them, the wheat with the largest sowing area in the east coast is the most important for farmers. In 1647, agricultural technicians of the Northern Botanical Garden used the method of separating the original pure line to cultivate excellent wheat seeds "Da Douhuang 47". This new variety not only increased by 20% compared with the previous one, but also had a better taste and was loved by everyone. Later, they aimed to further improve quality and increase yield, while taking into account the cultivation of disease-resistant varieties, and carried out experimental research on multiple projects. No latest results have been released yet.

As for rice, the investment is slightly smaller, but it is not without achievements. Some travelers brought a group of North Korea to study for more than ten years before the establishment of the Northern Botanical Garden, and have cultivated a seed with full seeds of "thin land rent 48" (meaning that they have gained more), which has received good responses after promoting planting in Xihu County. In addition, there are corn seeds "big ear yellow", "small ear yellow", sorghum seeds "small yellow valley", "big yellow shell", "big black shell", dry rice seeds "sparrow don't know", "Dingxi Wumang", barley seeds "Fumin" and other grain seeds. They are planted on a small scale among the people, and their reputation is not obvious, but it has also increased the yield of farmers solidly.

As for the cultivation of soybean seeds that have special significance for the East Coast economy, the East Coast people have devoted endless efforts. For example, they brought the Northeast soybean seeds (the variety has deteriorated in recent years, but it is still a good species) as the original species, and separated them purely, and selected the excellent variety "Huang Baozhu". "Huang Baozhu" is a medium-ripe species with large grains and bright color. The yield has increased by 30% to 40% compared to the original species, and the oil content has increased by about 3% compared to the original species, which has a high economic value.

In the past two years, the original soybean breeding stations that have all moved to the Northern Botanical Garden have discovered some new and excellent varieties in actual promotion, such as the moisture-resistant and oil-content varieties planted in Onuma Township, Yihe District (later named "Mancang Jin"), such as the drought-resistant varieties planted in Canyon Town (later named "Mancang Huang"), and for example, the varieties suitable for making dai sauce, soy sauce and soy products (later named "Mandihuang"), and of course there are also varieties suitable for planting in cold southern areas (later named "Keshuang 47") and a series of seeds.

According to the data summarized by the Ministry of Agriculture from various counties and townships, the proportion of farmers who change to new soybean seeds is getting higher and higher. After years of promotion, the sowing area has accounted for 45% of the total area, which has produced huge economic benefits. As the demand for seeds in various places gradually increases, the Northern Botanical Garden is also constantly recruiting troops and expanding its territory, preparing to select suitable places across the country to establish nurseries and original seeds to produce original seeds for improved soybeans and other seeds. Early this month, the garden even obtained the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture to establish an enterprise called "Northern Seed Company", and all the nurseries, original seeds and other assets in various places were placed. In the future, it will specialize in the production and sale of improved seeds to benefit the majority of farmers in China.

Back to the topic, local residents returned home with seeds. They now have almost nothing, and even the daily rations required by the government need to be relieved. Otherwise, they would not have to endure the first year, and even the second year, they would have to ask the Northwest Reclamation Bank to live a loan. Life is not easy. However, if you carefully observe their facial expressions, you will find that their mental state is quite good, because they still have hope for life. The cultivated land under their feet belongs to them, and now there are good varieties of hair. These Ming immigrants from the East feel that with their hard-working hands, the family will improve in at most two or three years. Then they will spend money to marry a wife, give birth to another nest of babies, and then redeem some land, and this root is firmly laid.
